Bitter melon was introduced to America from Africa about 500 years ago. It has a rich history folkloric uses, but is prized today mainly for its effectiveness in managing blood sugar. Recent studies support its use by diabetics as well as certain cancer patients. It is generally regarded as a stomachic but has some immune benefits as well.
It is a mild laxative and parasiticide and increases resistance to viral infections. It should not be taken during pregnancy, especially not in the early months of pregnancy.
Bitter Mellon pacifies both kapha and pitta doshas without aggravating vata dosha.
