Shankhapushpi is the primary Ayurvedic herb for anxiousness and swift mood changes that are, in turn, usually attributed to vata derangement but sometimes to a mixture of vata and pitta disturbances. In such cases, Shankhapushpi is often the herb of choice for pacifying turbulent emotions. Shankhapushpi is a rasayana herb and is often used as a regenerative herb for the brain. It is believed to modulate the neurochemistry of the brain. Shankhapushpi aids memory and reduces tension due to mental stimulation.

Shankhapushpi is a kind of morning glory that is found in the plains of northern India.  Its action is usually attributed by its stress-reducing properties:  it regulates the production of adrenaline and cortisol in a way that is calming.   As such, it is regarded as neuroprotective but it is also an herb to consider for problems of the lower intestines, the site of vata disorders.

Shankhapushpi is a sedative, nervine, and memory enhancer and is administered to children in combination with other herbs and almonds to help concentration, focus, comprehension, and memory.  It is regarded as safe and as an enhancer of IQ.  It has sedative properties and can be considered where there is chronic pain, especially pain in the intestines.
